June 15, 2004 - Converting a classic 2D fighting series to 3D isn't a new concept. In fact, Capcom has attempted it
several times with the Street Fighter EX series while SNK and Midway have taken some shots of their own. And though Mortal
Kombat: Deadly Alliance certainly turned out to be a lot better than Samurai Shodown 64 did, SNK Playmore is still
determined to give the 3D idea a second chance. Thus resulting in the experiment known as King of Fighters: Maximum Impact.
The first 3D KOF title designed specifically for the PlayStation 2.
Now despite the fact that we already gave KOF: Maximum Impact a quick playtest last month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, we still wanted to sit down and give the disc a more thorough examination. To do so we spent the last couple of hours toying around with the same build that was used at E3 and have explored just about every character on the roster. Or at least, all the characters that are available so far (13 of them out of what is believed to be approximately 20).
From the outset things definitely look good for hardcore fans too. As the 13 available fighters have multiple costumes to choose from with each of the outfits getting their inspiration from earlier games. Some of the characters like Kyo and Iori, however, even have a few of their classic win poses in addition to their costumes and win quotes. A great deal of the environments appears to be inspired by the older 2D series as well, while the music is very much in tune with the franchise's ongoing jazz/rock theme. Of course, the biggest nod to hardcore fans is how the fighting engine works: as it plays almost exactly like every other King of Fighters game in history.
Most notable is the fact that each participant's movesets are identical to those found in the 2D version. Whether its Kyo's classic Shiki Aragami or Maxima's Vapor Cannon, several of the familiar tactics and combos are in here. Quick dashes, evasive rolls, three-level super gauges, and defense break meters finish up every fighter's basic arsenal, while the timing to perform some of the more complicated maneuvers seem to remain pretty much in tact.
For the leap to 3D, SNK Playmore has lifted a few ideas from two of the genre's more popular mainstream 3D fighters, Bloody Roar and Tekken. More specifically, SNK has implemented a handy sidestep feature that acts as the players primary means of navigating the new three-dimensional space. So while gamers certainly won't have the same freedom that's available to them in games like Power Stone or to a lesser extent Virtua Fighter, they'll still be able to use a full 360-degree plane to their advantage. What will be more important strategically, however, is the fact that players can now utilize wall jumps and wall stuns much as they could in the aforementioned Bloody Roar. We expect the more devoted sect of Maximum Impact players to expose this new feature to its fullest.
What struck us as a little disappointing at this juncture, though, is how much personality the King of Fighters cast seems to have lost since its move to 3D. While some of the win poses we mentioned earlier have been retained, the more elaborate victory celebrations have been nixed in favor of generic arm raises and knee slaps. Furthermore, the story mode doesn't appear to be working yet and offers little to no character progression or purpose whatsoever. Granted this was the E3 build, so there's stilly plenty of room for improvement, but we'd be remiss to say we weren't a little disappointed.
Our biggest concern, however, is that the speed of the game is significantly less than that of the more recent 2D KOF titles. And while it's certainly on par with games like Tekken or Dead or Alive in terms of quickness, we'd like to see its 2D pacing retained -- it just wouldn't make any sense to slow the game down.
Concerns aside, King of Fighters: Maximum Impact still has some pretty strong potential. From what we've played so far, the two-player action can be pretty entertaining (especially among two KOF vets that know what they're doing) and the impressive-looking backgrounds certainly aren't hard on the eyes. We'll be back again soon with another update on Maximum Impact's progress when we get a newer build -- a build we anticipate will include several of the game's more compelling features like 3-on-3 Team Battle, a more complete story mode, customizable profiles, and a larger character roster. In the meantime, click our link below to check out the latest media.

Kikizo: One of the most distinctive things about OutRun2 is the scenery, and the different backgrounds you drive past. A lot of OutRun fans are wondering whether the Xbox version will offer any additional new stages.
Makoto Osaki: There is an additional set of courses, but I cannot say what they are. We are now asking Sumo to test the new courses but we have not decided which ones to use yet. Once we have decided, you may be surprised! It will be a big bonus for the users, and something you should look forward to!

News: Wyvern Wings
Wyvern Wings is a new 2D vertical arcade shooter from Fillmore Games. It was featured in this month's Arcadia. Check the site for system info, as well as several screens. The game is, I presume, out now (and is probably the first serious gaming effort from the amusement-based company).

Good news for Mortal Kombat fans all over the world - the sixth installment of the game (whether it will be called Deception or Mystification in your area) will be released not too long after the U.S. release! GameSpot reports that the U.S. release date will be October 4th, and IGN reports that the release date for PAL countries will be November 5th.
Gamespot.com has provided an updated report on Jakks Pacific's upcoming version for Mortal Kombat, specially designed for their TV Games line of products. From the article:
Jakks Pacific announced that it is planning to release the arcade version of Mortal Kombat as a plug-and-play TV Games device. Of special interest to fans of the classic fighter, the controller for Mortal Kombat will be an exact replica of the original Mortal Kombat arcade panel. The device will be available in October for about $20.
Only time will tell what is meant by an "exact replica" of the original arcade panel, but having the unit priced at $20 will certainly make this a must-have for the MK enthusiast. To read the article in its entirety, http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/07/01 ... 01813.html

You may remember a while back when GameSpot mentioned on their site that THQ was bringing the original Mortal Kombat to cell phones. While we did not get an official statement from Midway Games, THQ did indicate to us that they were porting Midway games for use with wireless phones. Now, GameSpy has recently updated their site with an article on the game.
THQ Wireless has us covered. Mortal Kombat is on the way to your handset. Only a few months separate you and ripping the spine out of Scorpion. We didn't actually have a chance to play this mobile edition at E3, but THQ Wireless assured us that franchise fans will be happy with this scaled-back (only four available fighters), but loving port from Backbone Entertainment of the arcade classic that turned this industry on its ear.
Click here to read the full article. Keep in mind, there is no release date yet. Also, this is not the same game as the one being produced by WildSeed, who are bringing MK: Deadly Alliance to cell phones this summer.
